Requesting The PGR To Attend A Service (What We Call A "Mission")

The Patriot Guard Riders of Texas can participate in the services of any member of the armed forces of the United States on active duty, when invited by the service member’s immediate family. The same policy is in effect for veterans (with Honorable Discharge) as well as members of the community’s first responders. Law enforcement organizations, such as but not limited to; state troopers, police officers, sheriffs, constables, state and local prison personnel, firemen, and any other state or local organization chartered with the responsibility of protecting the community and ensuring our federal, state, and local laws are obeyed.

The procedure for requesting a Mission (to attend a service) is simple and straightforward. This can be accomplished in several ways, including requesting the Funeral Home to contact us.  Please provide us with as much notice as possible.

1)   Go to the PGR Region’s Web Page, if they have one of their own (where the service will take place), and “Request a Mission” by filling out the respective form and selecting Submit. These are identified on the Texas map found on the home page at  http://www.pgrtexas.org.

2)   Call or e-mail the contact for the Region where the service will take place.  Include “Mission Request” in the subject field.  Include your contact information; name, e-mail address, phone number, and a detailed description of your question or request.

3)   Contact us is through the Patriot Guard Rider National Web Site at  https://www.patriotguard.org    Select “Request a Mission,” fill out the form, and select Submit.

Be sure to also request military participation through the Funeral Home.

Military Funeral Honors
"Honoring Those Who Served"

The Department of Defense (DOD) is responsible for providing military funeral honors. "Honoring Those Who Served" is the title of the DOD program for providing dignified military funeral honors to veterans who have defended our nation.

Upon the family's request, Public Law 106-65 requires that every eligible veteran receive a military funeral honors ceremony, to include folding and presenting the United States burial flag and the playing of Taps. The law defines a military funeral honors detail as consisting of two or more uniformed military persons, with at least one being a member of the veteran's parent service of the armed forces. The DOD program calls for funeral home directors to request military funeral honors on behalf of the veterans' family. However, the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) National Cemetery Administration cemetery staff can also assist with arranging military funeral honors at VA national cemeteries. Veteran organizations may assist in providing military funeral honors. When military funeral honors at a national cemetery are desired, they are arranged prior to the committal service by the funeral home.

The Department of Defense began the implementation plan for providing military funeral honors for eligible veterans as enacted in Section 578 of Public Law 106-65 of the National Defense Authorization Act for FY 2000 on Jan. 1, 2000.
